10 Ways to Refresh Your Country Home for Summer

Katharine · June 15, 2018 ·

Spread the love

Summer is here and it's a great time to give your country home a new look. Whenever the temperature outside starts to rise, I get an urge to lift my house out from the winter and bring some of that summer brightness indoors. I'm very fond of changing out colors and decorations to make my home feel lighter, brighter, and airy. Here's some ideas for you to give your country home decor a summery feel.

Ideas for Decorating Your Country Home for Summer

Now, don't feel pressured to do all these. Sometimes a little change can go a long way to helping your home decor take on a summer feel. Do as little or a much as you want and that your decorating budget allows. And who knows, once you get started you might get even more inspired and not want to stop!

1.Time to paint those bland winter walls!

Neutral tones are just fine, but add in some of the cool blues and greens that are making a statement this summer. Pastels and Ultra Brights, like sage, peach and yellow, are the trend for this year. There are many colors that compliment a country home decor theme.

2. Clear the clutter! Time for spring cleaning.

It's time you throw away all that old junk that you don't need. De-cluttering has a wonderful effect on your home's atmosphere. Start with the piles around the house. Get some bins and baskets to make organizing closets easier. De-cluttering shelves and table tops by removing some of the excess decorations. Too many decorations will make your home feel claustrophobic. Instead of crowding up your shelves and tables with treasures, choose a few favorites. And, then later you can switch them out.

3. Splurge on some new artwork.

Whether it's a new farmhouse sign, a new canvas print, some folkart paintings, or a beautiful quilt, there's tons of great artists out there to buy some beautiful pieces of art that fits with your country home decor. I enjoy browsing Etsy for ideas. Amazon also had a handmade department. Plus you can browse the shopping directory here on PrimMart for individual country primitive artists' websites.

4. New accessories!

Get some new frames for your photos. Change up that raggedy ann doll, add a pretty bowl with summer potpourri, or a new table runner. There are so many options for you to pick from! Throw pillows can bring any color into your room or out of your artwork. Add some lighter farmhouse style accessories like galvanized metal and antique style lamps. Try out a summer theme that's a little tropical or by the beach. I've been crushing on the pineapple motif coming back after being popular back in the 80's. Boy, I wish I'd kept my pineapple stencil I used to have! Instead I'm working on a string art piece! Yep, string art is back too!

5. Change your window treatments.

Open the shutters. Switch out heavy curtains for lighter fabrics.  Go for light shades like white or neutral tones or go bolder and pick shades that compliment your wall or furniture colors. If you home is more farmhouse or primitive, try simple muslin or burlap for your window treatments.

6. New rugs can change the entire look of your space!

A new rug can give your living space a whole new look. Area rugs bring a sitting area together. For your country home you have a wide range of styles you can pick from like braided or woven. Lighter colors will brighten up the room. There's more modern styles if your home is more of a modern country style. Or go more colonial with a floor cloth.

7. Love your furniture but looking for a change?

Slipcovers are still the way to go! Solids are always safe, but if you want to branch out, a lot of the light colored damasks are coming back in. Again, if you want to be trendy, go with greens and blues–light to bright colors. If you know your taste, then just be creative with it!

Change out a few of your side tables with lighter colored woods or glass tops. Or, cover up the winter table tops with some light colored scarves or placemats. Work with what you've got, it brings out your most creative self!

8. Change your dishware for the season!

Use fun, bright colors and chic designs on pottery or glass. Tangerines, ocean tones, hot pinks and purples!

9. Open up your space and add a splash of color with fresh flowers.

They are at their best now and the colors are the inspiration for modern color trends. House plants and foliage of any kind (even if it's faux) are a must in your spring space! I have some cute little succulents now growing in my dining room.

10. Make Your Home Smart

Nowadays there are many things you can update your home to make life easier and help you save on utility bills. Make your home a smart home can be as simple as upgrading to a automatic thermostat or you do more to include lighting, security systems, and more. There are many advantages to having a smart home that makes life easier for you family and help you use less energy to cool and light your home.

So there you have it! Summer is the time for reinventing and refreshing!
