5 Daily Habits to Fight Addiction

5 Daily Habits to Fight Addiction

One of the best ways to overcome addiction is to change your habits. When you take bad habits and replace them with good habits, you get more control over your life. If you make an effort to change your daily habits, you will have better self-control, and the addiction will have less control over you.

What kind of habits will help in a fight against addiction? Any good habit that takes the place of a bad one will be beneficial, but here are a few that will benefit you in multiple ways.

Take a Break from Your Phone

Do you have trouble controlling your phone usage? If you look at it first thing in the morning and spend time on it right before bed, then your phone may have a grip on your life. If you can get more control in that area of your life, you will have more control over any kind of addiction you might have, whether it is alcoholism, smoking, pornography, or social media. When you take control of when you use your phone and how much you use it, that helps you have greater agency in your life.

So, what does a daily break from your phone look like? It means waiting to look at the phone when you wake up. You give yourself a space between waking up and picking up the phone. That space can be as little as 10 minutes to help improve your self-control. The longer that space is, the more control you will get.

Then, make sure to put your phone away before bed- well before bed. It is wise to spend the last hour of your awake time off your phone and any other digital devices. That way, you can fall asleep more easily. If you can create that kind of space between you and your phone before bed each night, you will fight addiction better.

Clean Your Home

We are not suggesting that you clean your entire house every day, but we do think it is wise to clean some of it each day. Spend a little time each day tidying up, whether that is sweeping, dusting, washing dishes, or organizing. When you do that, you will get a cleaner, tidier house. That means fewer allergens and irritants in the home. It also gives you greater self-control.

As you struggle to get control over your addiction, you may have some days where you are feeling unwell and may not be able to do all the things you would like to do. You may need some help cleaning the house on those days, because it could bother you to see it looking untidy if you are used to cleaning it all the time.  Consider hiring Jacksonville, FL industrial cleaning and residential cleaning to get help with your home or business in keeping them clean.

When you suffer from addiction, some parts of your life can get out of control, and it is okay to ask for help. Professional cleaning can assist you while you start adding a little daily cleaning to your regular habits.

Eat a Healthy Diet

As in all other areas of your life, when you adopt a good habit, you get better control over all your bad habits. One area you might be able to regain some control in is with your dieting. Try to eat healthy foods or at least make your diet healthier. You can do this by adding fruits and vegetables to your diet, skipping desert, cutting out carbonated drinks, and cutting back sugar.

Any good changes you make to your diet will benefit your health, and they help you to regain control over all other aspects of your life. Even small changes in your diet can have many incredible effects that spread to all of your life.

Get up Earlier

How long have you had the same wake up time? Does your wake up time vary from one day to another and you have trouble getting up in the morning?

It may be helpful to change your sleeping habits. When you make yourself get up earlier, you fight against that side of you that just wants to do whatever it likes no matter the consequences. You get more self-control.

It will help you if you choose the same time each day to get up, as that helps you keep a regular sleep schedule and feel more rested. Being rested will help you have a good mood and have more self-control as well. When you are tired, you are more likely to give in to bad impulses and do something you wish you would not do.

You may struggle with this new habit at first. In order to force yourself to wake up fully, you can set an alarm, and then get out of bed immediately and then go splash water on your face. That way, you will wake fully up and be more likely to stay up than to go back to bed.

Exercise

Here is a habit that will really change your life. If you exercise a little each day, you will become more active, healthier, and more energetic. You will also develop self-discipline so that you can more easily say no.

This is another habit that will be very difficult to keep with. It is important that you choose an exercise that you like to do and that you can easily do daily. You don’t have to do a lot of exercise each day to make this new habit a successful one at fighting addiction. Just do a small amount to start with, and that will be enough to make a big impact.

As you keep with these new habits, you will find that it is easier to get rid of old, bad habits. You will also find that you can say no to your addiction and temptations much more easily. You can reach those goals you set for yourself, if you are willing to change one small habit at a time.
