6 Different Ways to Treat Muscle Pain

6 Different Ways to Treat Muscle Pain Throughout your life, there may be times when you experience some kind of muscle pain. It could be that you’ve been in a minor accident, tried a new workout, or even just slept funny. At times it can certainly be painful. However, there are a few different things that you can try to ease them.

Below, we are going to discuss six ways that you can treat muscle pain. Want to learn more? Then keep on reading!

Heat/Cold Therapy

If you want to target muscle pain before it gets worse, many experts recommend doing heat therapy as soon as possible. This includes applying a warm damp towel, or heating pack to the affected area. It works by allowing more blood and oxygen to be delivered to your injured tissues.

On the other hand, you may also try cold therapy to reduce swelling. Apply an ice pack to the affected area or consider soaking in a cold bath. Just make sure you don’t stay there for too long, and never apply ice directly to the skin.

Massage

Massage therapy works by relaxing your muscles to reduce painful contractions and nerve compression. By stimulating blood circulation, it helps get rid of lactic acid build-up while washing away any other “toxic waste” that may be present. Alongside this, the added relaxation can help take your mind off the pain. Here are a few types of massage that you should look into:

  •  Swedish Massage Therapy
  • Myofascial Release Therapy
  • Cupping Therapy
  • Thai Massage Therapy
  • Hot Stone Massage

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation unit (TENS) is a small battery-operated device that treats pain by delivering electrical pulses through the skin. Alongside assisting with muscle and joint pain, it is also recommended for endometriosis, arthritis, and many other medical conditions. One of the best benefits of this type of pain relief is that it is discrete and portable. Take a look at this home tens unit to get started.

Epsom Salt Bath

Taking a bath with Epsom salts is said to be one of the best ways to ease muscle aches after a workout. While more studies need to be done to confirm its capabilities, it apparently breaks down into magnesium and sulfate, which can be absorbed through the skin. Even if you don’t believe in it, relaxing in a warm bath itself has its advantages.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the process of using long needles to stimulate nerves in our muscles. This can then produce endorphins, known to relieve many symptoms, including muscle aches and pains. One thing to keep in mind is that the amount of treatments you may need does vary. While one may be enough for a mild condition, others may require up to five before they feel relief.

Medication

Lastly, the final way to treat muscle pain is with medication. There are many over-the-counter muscle rubs and creams that can help, and you might also look at getting some regular anti-inflammatories. If pain persists, you should see your doctor to rule out any other conditions.
