8 Things You Should Know Before Buying a New Mattress

8 Things You Should Know Before Buying a New Mattress

Your mattress is where you go to allow your body to relax and recover from the day. So, it’s a no-brainer that you would want to select one that provides you with the comfort you hope for.

But before you settle for the first mattress that catches your eye, here are the 8 things you need to know about shopping for your new bed.

1. Learn the Different Types of Mattresses

There are many types of mattresses available, which means you can find the perfect material that suits your taste and budget. Each one has its own unique features, such as support, comfort, and durability.

You should also learn about bed bugs to know which kind of mattress or material they prefer so that you can avoid them. For example, higher-density mattresses will keep these creatures at bay, so you may want to opt for memory foam or latex materials.

2. Look for the Average Lifespan

Each type of mattress has an average life span, even though the general life span is up to 7-8 years for most of them. Knowing the specific life span can help you decide based on what offers the most value.

3. Be Wary of Gimmicks

While retailers may label mattresses as “orthopedic” or “medically-approved,” no medical institution approves mattresses to bear these names. If you’re concerned about a bed that supports your unique conditions, go straight to an orthopedic expert rather than trusting salespeople.

4. Remember that Firmer Isn’t Always Better

Just enough hardness is required to support your backbone and other parts of the body adequately. Excessive hardness might generate uncomfortable pressure points and hinder your back from sleeping in its proper curvature.

Plush mattresses are increasing as the mattress of choice, so don’t be afraid to give a plush bed a try if it’s most comfortable for you.

5. Opt for Trial Periods and Generous Return Policies

Most bedding stores will let you try the mattress by lying down on it. Many stores also provide a testing period, ensuring free returns if you’re dissatisfied with your purchase within a particular time limit. Take the time to read the small print and know all the terms and conditions.

6. Choose the Appropriate Size for Your Space

You need to pick a bed that will suit your needs and expectations. If you’ll be sharing your bed with your partner, you need to ensure it’s large enough for both of you to sleep comfortably. However, if you have a smaller bedroom, you may need to make some size compromises. But as long as a mattress can fit in your bedroom, typically, the larger it is, the happier you’ll be sleeping in it.

7. Protect Your Investment

A mattress is a considerable investment, so you’ll want to enjoy it for a while. To keep it in top condition, invest in a waterproof mattress protector. This would allow you to prevent any stains on the mattress, such as period stains and coffee stains, and ensure that you still get your warranty back should you need to claim it.

8. Premium Cost Does Not Always Imply a High Standard

It’s reasonable to think that the higher the price, the better the quality. However, a hefty price doesn’t always indicate superior quality, and it certainly doesn’t mean that it will suit your preferences. Focus on the mattress itself first rather than the brand or price tag.

Find Your Perfect Mattress

When the time comes to choose, these insights will help you find the mattress that fits all your needs and avoid any buying regrets.

Always go with your intuition, and don’t fall for the tricky gimmicks of salespeople or inexplicably higher price tags. If it feels good to you, is a reasonable price, and you work to maintain it, you’ll enjoy amazing nights of sleep for years to come.
