Are you looking for the perfect way to declutter your clothes once and for all? If so, then you’re not the only one! I have been downsizing my belongings for quite some time now, and the closet was by far the hardest part! I’ve had countless conversations with people struggling with a closet full of clothes they “love” but nothing to wear. If this sounds like you too, then here is my number one tip to help you declutter your clothes closet with just one easy step!
Is your closet cluttered or just unorganized?
Before we get into any of the details about cluttering and decluttering a space, you need to answer this simple question. If I piled my entire decluttered closet on the floor, it would look pretty messy, cluttered, and disorganized. An organized closet will function well for you and help give your space the decluttered look you’ve been dreaming of. What you might be missing is, in fact, the organizational piece to the decluttering puzzle.
Create a closet based on your lifestyle
This is my number one step to decluttering your closet. Ask yourself what kind of lifestyle you have. Are you a stay-at-home mom with toddlers all around you? If you’re spending most of your time at home, you won’t need as many going-out clothes as a woman always on the go. Figure out what kind of lifestyle you live, and make your wardrobe primarily full of those items. It’s okay to have a few things, such as a date night dress or something to wear to your best friend’s wedding, but those pieces shouldn’t take up your whole wardrobe if that’s not the kind of day-to-day life you live.
Get rid of clothes you don’t like and won’t wear
Want to give your closet a deep clutter. Be real with yourself! Don’t keep a ton of fancy dresses if you rarely have to wear them. Don’t keep business professional clothes if you have no professional place to be. Get rid of any clothes that aren’t getting used in your closet and save that real estate for the clothes you wear all the time.
If you don’t like the way a shirt fits or don’t ever wear something, this is also a sign that you probably can let it go. We like our clothes enough to wear them, so when we don’t, it means that we probably don’t like them as much as we thought we did.
Rent instead of buy
As you get rid of clothes, remember that you don’t have to buy a new piece of clothing every time an event comes up that ywhich ou need a new outfit for. Instead of filling your closet with clothes you’ll wear once and never again, rent the outfit! For example, get a dress for your friend’s wedding, then return it the next day. You get that perfect outfit that fits like a glove without having to worry about squeezing into it when you go to another wedding in two years.
Decluttering your closet doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming! These tips will help you declutter your clothes closet in no time and help you get on your way toward a more minimalist and clutter-free lifestyle.
