A Beginner’s Guide To Living Sustainably

A Beginner’s Guide To Living Sustainably

Sustainable living is a buzzword that’s thrown around quite a lot. But when it comes to implementing green lifestyle practices, many of us fail to take any action. Because of the ongoing climate crises, soaring temperatures and melting glaciers have been observed across the globe. Sustainable living is greater than an individual’s personal beliefs, it’s a necessary responsibility to save our planet. For sustainable living made easy check out The Sustainability Project.

A sustainable lifestyle isn’t something that can be achieved overnight, and neither should you expect it to. It is perfectly alright to start with a few changes and take it from there. In this post, we’re sharing some sustainable changes you can adopt without overly compromising your current lifestyle. Take a look.

Embrace Minimalism

From clothes to furniture, capitalism has propagated this idea that buying more things will make you happier, which is untrue. By embracing minimalism, you’ll be able to focus on things that actually bring your joy rather than expecting happiness from materialistic possessions. Conscious consumption minimizes waste and helps the environment.

Switch to Renewable Energy

Conventionally, energy is generated by burning fossil fuels that increase the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The alternative eco-friendly option is to switch to renewable energy. Even partially powering your energy requirements with solar, wind, or any other renewable energy will make a difference. For green energy plans for your home or business, check out AGL electricity.

Stop Using Disposable Cups

From getting coffee to groceries, there are a number of ways you are using single-use plastic. Dispose of disposable cups and bags from your life by always carrying reusable cups, straws, and cloth bags.

Shop Green & Ethical Brands

Mica is a popular shimmery material widely used in makeup products. But do you know how it is supplied? Most mica sourcing organizations use child labour and other unethical practices.

Avoid spending your money on such brands and, instead, go for green brands that ethically manufacture products.

Eat Plant-Based Diet

Did you know that farming plant-based products require a fraction of resources than producing animal products? Start eating a few vegans or vegetarian meals every week. Contrary to popular belief, vegan foods can be quite delicious and flavorful. If you don’t know where to start, Niomi Smart and Goodful are two excellent YouTube Channels for plant-based recipes and sustainable living.

Choose Locally-Produced Goods

Goods imported from overseas and long distances consume a lot of resources. An eco-friendly choice would be buying locally-produced goods. This is also a great way to support local small businesses.

Dial-Back Thermostat

Just by turning down the thermostat by a few degrees, you can considerably lower your energy consumption. So, wear a few extra layers of clothing and dial back the heating.

Enhance Energy Efficiency

There are several ways you’re using more energy than required, incandescent lights being one of them. Replace CFLs with LED lights, which are energy-efficient and highly durable. In addition, be vigilant about switching off lights and electronics when not in use and improve home insulation to prevent energy loss.

Start Carpooling

Start carpooling with your friends to school or work. You will save fuel and vehicle maintenance costs as well as help the environment. Alternatively, public transport is another eco-friendly and economical option.

Conserve Water

Do you often take exceptionally long showers? Not only are you wasting water, but also consuming a lot of energy. Try taking shorter showers, and if that’s something you can’t do without, then install a low-flow shower head.

The Bottom Line

In a lot of ways, green living is neither expensive nor inconvenient. In fact, you can save a lot of money by incorporating sustainable practices into your everyday life. So what’s stopping you? Do what is right for the future of our planet!
