Last week we got a new Nectar mattress for our master bedroom. We’ve had a pillow-top mattress for a few years and noticed it was becoming less and less comfy to sleep. I’d been wondering about getting a mattress that wasn’t a pillow top, but I didn’t want any that was too firm. I’d heard about the memory foam mattresses. However, many of them are expensive. It was around that time I learned about Nectar mattresses through a blog partner campaign they were promoting. So, I contacted them to participate. (March and November, 2018 Updates below!)
Getting my Nectar Mattress
Upon, being accepted by Nectar into the campaign, I received a queen size mattress to review and share about with you. It arrived by FedEx promptly in a duffel bag type package. Because it’s memory foam, the company packages them for shipping compressed in plastic and rolled up to be placed in the duffel bag. And that duffel bag was inside a second blue bag shown below. We untied and slipped the mattress out of the blue bag before taking it to the bedroom.
Unpacking Our New Mattress
Instead of this huge awkward box or needing furniture delivery, my husband and I carried it easily to our bedroom. We had to wrestle with our old mattress, but managed to get it off the box springs and make room for the Nectar mattress. By the way, this mattress is designed to work with or without a boxsprings in case you have a platform bed instead of a box springs style one.
After, removing the mattress from the duffle bag shown above, we found the instructions with a special opener. The opener made it easy and safe to cut open the layers of plastic keeping the mattress compressed. The first layer kept the mattress rolled up.
The opener glided right along to get that layer off and allow the mattress to unroll.
Once it was laying flat I used the opener to slice open the final layer. As soon I began cutting around the edge, I could hear a quiet “whoosh” as air began filling package. And, the mattress began expanding. Additionally, there were matching pillows rolled up with the mattress. Within a couple hours our mattress was ready for us to sleep on it.
Sleeping on Our New Mattress
After sleeping on it a few nights, my husband and I agree the firmness was surprisingly good. We’d been used to a pillow top which is a bit softer. But with the firmness also coming with the give of memory foam, it works very well to support our bodies without sinking in too much. The pillows are much firmer and heavier than what we’ve used in the past, but they work great with the mattress to keep you head is a comfy position while you sleep. I noticed I woke up much less to roll over. And, it seemed that my husband and I both snored less.
The cooling cover works great! We both get hot at night, my husband especially. This mattress feels cools to the touch and it felt good to sleep on a mattress that didn’t heat up to our bodies. Here’s a look at how Nectar makes their mattress.
My only negatives about the mattress is that doesn’t have the side walls of a regular mattress. When I sit on the side, it compresses down which makes me feel like I might slide off. It isn’t as thick as a pillow top mattress so it sets lower on our box springs than our old mattress did. We may consider getting a platform-type bed that will raise up further from the floor.
March 9, 2018 Update
We’ve been sleeping on our Nectar mattress for almost six months. The longer I slept on it the more I liked it. I’ve don’t feel the need to change positions as often as I used to. I’m a side sleeper and I usually wake up in the same position as when I fell asleep. That means my pressure points on my body that used to bother me on the old mattress aren’t a problem with our Nectar mattress. No sore shoulder, hips or back with mattress when I wake up, yay! The sides being softer than a traditional mattress or it being lower doesn’t bother us anymore, either. The mattress looks as new as the day we bought it. It hasn’t sunk or flatten out at all. And, that’s saying something when two larger people sleep on it nightly.
November 29, 2018 Update
We’ve been sleeping on our Nectar mattress for about 15 months. And, we are still enjoying it. Both my husband and I are heavy so we wondered if a mattress like this would show wear early. Luckily, our mattress is just a nice as the day we got it. Unlike our old pillow top, this mattress returns to its original shape when we get up. It conforms to our bodies without us sinking into it. I also, like how easy it is for me to move it. It’s lighter in weight than old mattress. That makes it easier for me to lift it when tucking bed covers or adjusting on the box springs when it gets scooted by us sitting up in bed to watch a little bedtime TV.
If you’re shopping for a new mattress, I recommend considering Nectar. They are affordable, come with a 365 day return and a forever warranty. Plus shipping and returns are free!
