Discourse and Mental Health

Discourse and Mental Health

Dialogue is a life, human, social and institutional necessity. People-to-people meetings, talk shows, newspapers, and websites with anonymous posting features can facilitate it.

Mental health providers such as Giovanni Stanghellini – a psychiatrist, psychotherapist and Doctor at Italy’s Chieti University – as well as many others have talked about how dialogue is crucial for treating and preventing many mental health issues.

Stanghellini represented patients’ conditions when they enter the office after any “odd experiences” with a simple piece of paper as an example. He argues that the fundamental tenet of clinical phenomenology is that the work of clinicians is to unveil the role of a specific patient. The patient appears to you as a piece of paper that is about to be thrown away. The university lecturer advised the student; “What you should do is gently unfold this paper so you can read what is on its surface”.

Dialogue is a communication mechanism to understand the interlocutor’s thoughts and to bring about convergence in the visions and points of view between the interlocutors within an integrated system. Dialogue can be adopted to avoid failure in positive communication. Through dialogue, we can identify new ideas from which we can take what is appropriate for everyone without fanaticism or bias toward one party at the expense of the other. One of its virtues is that it introduces us to things we did not know. It is a treatment method for all problems. Dialogue takes many forms and models.

Dialogue is a civilized trait, a social virtue, and a moral value. It is also a means of communication and understanding to achieve benefits and ward off risks. Its importance becomes apparent the more it is linked to issues of society and politics, given its sensitivity and connection to the general situation and a common destiny. Whenever state problems increase, societal crisis intensifies, and the situation approaches collapse, an urgent need arises to launch a comprehensive societal dialogue to address the case before it is too late and disaster strikes.

However, the desired dialogue must create an incubating environment and a positive atmosphere that creates trust and instills hope and certainty in the possibility of change, especially when there is the sincerity of intentions, unification of efforts, and general awareness of the need for joint action within the framework of a clear and comprehensive vision to fight tyranny, combat corruption and achieve freedom and dignity.

Dialogue requires accurate and responsible awareness, starting from understanding the subject of the dialogue, leading to understanding neself and the other partners. It must meet several conditions to be balanced and produce the desired results, the most important of which is that the interlocutor must be skilled, capable, and knowledgeable about the matter in question. They must have the scientific and cognitive competence and experience to provide additions and specify the topic of the dialogue, its objectives, points of disagreement and agreement. It also requires a set of etiquette and morals to reach the goal, such as gentleness, kindness, humility, good listening, calm, justice, fairness of opinion, and patience.

Dialogue based on frankness and boldness and equal opportunities for discussion to search for solutions allows for the convergence of visions through all parties sitting at one table to solve the situation and get out of the bottleneck and win the battle of time.

When it comes to dialogie and mental health, one should keep in mind that mental health is more complicated than just having a mental disorder or not. All facets of our lives have an impact on our well-being, which in turn has an impact on how we enjoy life, work, and time with our loved ones. Talking about mental health is more important than ever right now. In 2021, ,ore than 55% of employees, according to BetterUp’s data, were not suffering from a mental illness but were also not prospering. These are considered in the middle since they are not clinically diagnosed as having mental health issues, but are also not at their peak according to the data, at least in terms of mental health.

Now that physical health has received unprecedented attention due to the pandemic, it’s time to examine the other key aspects of wellbeing.

But just because the epidemic ends won’t make the effects of more individuals suffering from mental illness or disorder go away. A study that was published in the National Library of Medicine examines the increase in mental health disorders that happened in light of the trauma and PTSD that New Yorkers experienced after 9/11. PTSD and depression rates remained more than twice as high 14 years after the incident as they were in the general population. The widespread stress and trauma experienced by the workforce these past few years will affect every company. Years may pass before the effect is recognized in terms of performance concerns, interpersonal dynamics, health expenses, and absenteeism costs.

Never before has the discussion around mental health awareness been more widespread, vital, or public. This is a good thing. After all, understanding how to take care of your mental health requires developing awareness.
