Everything You Need to Know About Granite Countertops

Everything You Need to Know About Granite Countertops

Before making your final decision about granite countertops, you should understand their advantages and disadvantages. Granite is easy to clean. It can be cleaned with mild soap and water, but it is essential to avoid using grit or acidic cleansers. Unlike marble, granite is not prone to etching. However, it is essential to seal granite regularly to protect it from water and stains.

Natural Stone

When deciding which natural stone to use for your countertop, there are several things to consider. Among these are the color, veining, and availability. Rarer colors are typically more expensive than more readily available ones. Prices can vary widely and can vary from slab to slab. Granite is one of the most complex materials on earth, ranking between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale. It requires special care to maintain its finish.

Granite countertops are scratch resistant. They are generally heat-resistant up to 250 degrees Celsius. However, direct application of heat to granite is discouraged because of the possibility of cracking. Studies also show that granite is more bacteria-resistant than most other surfaces.

Resilience and Durability

The durability of granite countertops is essential for any kitchen remodel project. The material is naturally scratch resistant and can stand up to heat and various kitchen utensils. As a result, granite is a popular choice for kitchen countertops. However, proper care and maintenance should be taken to keep the stone in good condition.

The main benefit of granite countertops near me is their resilience to everyday wear and tear. They are resistant to bacteria and staining and can be sealed or waxed to protect them from everyday use. However, the granite surface can still be damaged by sharp objects such as knives and chopping boards, so it is essential to protect the surface with a cutting board.

Price

Several factors determine the price of granite countertops. First, consider the size of the slab. Large slabs cost more than smaller ones. Large slabs are more durable and offer consistent color and pattern. Small slabs tend to be cheaper but require professional installation. Additionally, the thickness of the granite also affects its price. Thick granite slabs are more potent and provide more material for the installer.

Another factor affecting granite countertops’ price is the edging used. Some granite slabs come with standard edgings, such as a quarter-beveled edge or a quarter-round edge. For more expensive countertops, premium edging may be used. These edgings can add about $5 per linear foot to the total cost. Other options include waterfall edging, ogee edging, or mitered or laminated edging.

Edge Styles

When choosing granite countertops, there are several edge styles to choose from. There are two common types: bullnose and double pencil edges. The bullnose edge is known for its smooth surface, while the double pencil edge is more rounded. Both styles offer a sleek contemporary feel, while the double pencil edge also gives a thinner appearance to the countertop.

The waterfall edge is a trendy choice, particularly for kitchen islands. The edge is smooth with sharp corners, which can pose a problem in a small space. The waterfall edge is also expensive and depends on the design of the kitchen and the surrounding room. However, this edge style can add a touch of sophistication to your kitchen. It can also prevent spills from dripping onto the cabinetry, which is always helpful.

Care

Proper care and maintenance of granite countertops are essential to keep them in good condition for years to come. It is important to avoid using highly acidic or alkaline cleaners on these surfaces. Instead, you should use mild dishwashing detergent and pH-balanced stone cleaners. These products should be applied to the granite surface using a soft cloth.

After you clean the surface, it is important to wipe it with a dry cloth. For best results, use a cleaning solution specially made for granite. Avoid using abrasive cleaners as they can damage the sealant.
