Judy of Holly Ridge Folk Art was generous to sponsor this week’s giveaway. I, personally, have always been fond of painted and gourd folk art. And I can guess, you also enjoy having unique pieces to treasure and decorate with during the holidays. Once you see Judy’s work you’ll fall in love with her creations.
Getting Know Holly Ridge Folk Art
How did you get started?
In the very early 1980’s, I saw my very first cypress knee santa at a local craft fair. Unfortunately, we didn’t have extra funds for santas! Fast forward a couple of years…I came into the possession of a cypress knee! So, I decided to paint it. Keep in mind, I had never painted a lick! I have to admit, that Santa was scary!! But, I was hooked!
What inspired you?
I fell in love with painting. And, I discovered that I had been blessed with a gift to create. Of all my art forms, painting is my passion and my surface can be just about anything. I love to take “junk” and vintage finds and give them new life. I also enjoy making my Gourd Head dolls and sculpting.
We do every aspect that goes into our finished projects. And, that includes cleaning and prepping gourds, debarking and leveling cypress knees, cutting and prepping wood surfaces to paint, gathering driftwood, etc. Plus, we love to forage antique and “junk” stores, estate and farm auctions and yard sales to find treasures to repurpose.
Where do you sell your folk art?
This giveaway is for two handpainted gourds snowman ornaments. Each one is about 4 to 4.5 inches in length and are made with real banana gourds and are unique one-of-a-kind. Value is $20.
