Household Pests That Are Ruining Your Home More Than You Realize

I’m sure most people are aware of the different household pests out there that can wreak havoc throughout our homes. A lot of these pests are pretty obvious, and we’re normally quite aware of how they cause problems and what problems they cause. However, there are plenty of pests that are ruining your home way more than you actually realize. Some of them are so small that they’re hidden from view, but the impact they have is massive.

It may surprise you to know that common household pests can do a lot of damage to both the structure and visual appeal of your home. So, if you’re someone that spends a lot of time working on home interior design, then you need to get rid of all these pests right away. Naturally, it helps to know what you’re up against. So, here are some common household pests that are seriously ruining your home:

Rodents

Needless to say that nobody wants a rat infestation in their home. Even though they’re quite small animals, and will pretty much run away if they see you, there’s just something very terrifying about them. Maybe it’s their weird little feet or the squeaky sound they make?

Either way, they’re not a good pest to have in your home for multiple reasons. Firstly, from a health point of view, rats carry all sorts of diseases and bacteria. If they get into your home and scuttle around, then they could easily cause things to become infected. This is particularly problematic when you realize they often find their way to your kitchen.

However, the worst thing about rats is that they chew and scratch everything. A rat can chew and scratch a hole through wooden cupboards and walls with relative ease. Therefore, you could end up with holes in your kitchen cabinets and goodness knows where else. As you can imagine, this causes your home to look like an absolute mess if there are holes everywhere. Not only that, but they’ve also been known to chew through cables and wires.

In fact, I have a friend whose dishwasher stopped working because a rat had chewed through the cable linking it to the power source. The good thing is, you can get rid of rodents quite easily. There are many pest control services that help you banish rodents and prevent them from coming back. Do this as soon as you notice one around your home because the longer you leave it, the more friends they recruit!

Bed Bugs

Goodnight, sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite! My parents used to say that to me every night before I went to sleep as a child. I didn’t really take much notice of it as I thought bed bugs didn’t actually exist. Well, they definitely do exist, and they cause numerous problems in your home. For starters, they bite people, which can lead to difficult medical problems and lots of people in your family may be scratching these bites for days on end.

But, they also ruin your furniture and upholstery. Granted, they don’t actually eat their way through wooden furniture, but a bed bug infestation can cause you to completely throw out chairs, beds, mattresses; you name it. This throws your whole house up in the air as you need to get new stuff in, and it can cost so much money. If you’re not sure of what has been affected, you can seek the service of a bed bug sniffing dog. These dogs are specially trained to sniff out any signs of bed bugs, which makes it easier to ensure that your home is made completely clear of them.

To make things even worse, removing bed bugs is a lot harder than you think. Some people use chemical treatments, but the best idea is a heat treatment from a qualified exterminator. You need to ensure that all the bugs and their eggs are gone, or else you’ll never put an end to the infestation. While they may be small, a bed bug infestation can start in one bedroom and quickly spread through your home. As such, you need to take care of them quickly!

Termites

When it comes to small pests that create massive problems, few can compete with termites. They’re particularly problematic as you probably don’t even realize you have a termite problem until it’s too late. Believe it or not, but it’s estimated that termites alone cause billions of dollars worth of property damage every year. What do they do? Mostly, they get into wooden structures and eat them. That’s right, they eat them.

This means they can literally turn a nice dense wooden block into a hollow one with ease. They can take huge chunks out of wooden furniture, and they can cause severe structural damage to your home. Most homes are built with wooden beams that help keep things up and take a lot of the load from the house. If termites infest your home and get at one of these, then it could lead to a serious structural issue that hurts your home and costs loads to fix.

The best thing to do is keep checking for termites as often as possible. Pay close attention to everything wooden in your home, and look out for little holes here and there, or piles of wood shavings on the floor. If you spot the telltale signs of termites, then get an exterminator in right away!

Beetles

Beetles freak me out, no matter how cute they seemed in A Bug’s Life. They’re quite big in terms of insect sizing, and they can cause lots of issues in your home. There’s a particular type of beetle called a lyctid beetle that is a significant cause for concern. Why? Because it primarily attacks hardwood things. So, if you just got a lovely new hardwood floor installed in your home, then an infestation from these beetles will ruin it.

Your flooring isn’t the only thing at risk, they also damage cupboards and cabinets too. Again, lookout for signs of a beetle infestation by checking for round holes in wooden structures; mainly your flooring or cabinets. Then, call someone in to take care of the situation.

Be on the lookout for all of these household pests if you want to keep your home in the best shape possible. I know, it’s gross thinking about these things in your home, but the reality is they can easily get in there. By knowing what to expect, you will hopefully be more cautious and can catch them before they cause lots of issues.
