How to Calm a Dog During a Storm

How to Calm a Dog During a Storm

Storms and dogs are an uneasy combination that leads to anxiousness and behaviors you’re not sure how to manage. There’s nothing quite as dreadful as watching your dog getting anxious because of a storm, not knowing how to make them feel better. Being prepared ahead of time to help them through the storm is crucial to ensure they remain calm and do not become injured attempting to escape.

So what is the best way to help your dog stress less? Here is how to calm a dog during a storm.

Distract Your Dog With Their Favorite Toys

Before a storm begins, make sure you have some of your dog’s favorite toys on hand to avoid dog anxiety. When you see signs that the storm has made your dog anxious or scared, take out a toy and try to get him to focus on it. You can even take it one step further and reward him with treats whenever he plays with the toy.

Along with distracting him, you can also make them wear a wound recovery boot for dogs. This will help prevent any injury or allergy to your dog’s sensitive paws.

Also, provide a calming environment, such as closing the curtains or playing calming music. By combining a distraction and a calming environment, you can help your dog cope during a storm.

Create a Safe Den

To create a safe den, start by finding an interior room of the house that is soundproof and as far away from windows and exterior doors as possible. Create a comfortable bed for the dog on the floor using soft blankets and provide some toys, such as chew or squeaky toys.

Turn on calming music or white noise to create a peaceful atmosphere in the room. Playing soft music, scents of lavender and chamomile, and giving treats can also be helpful in calming the pet further and improving dog health.

Contact a Trainer

Explain the situation you are dealing with and ask a trainer if they can help you. They should be able to provide you with a plan tailored to your individual case and needs.

Ask any questions you may have and ensure that the plan they put in place is something you feel comfortable with. There may also be some techniques in their plan that you can practice in the days leading up to the storm so that your pup is better prepared when it arrives.
