How to care for Plants That Grow in the Dark

How to care for Plants That Grow in the Dark

Plants are of different types and varieties and each has specific requirements for survival. Some plants require complete sunlight to grow while others can thrive in complete darkness. Those that grow in the dark can be planted indoors. Most plant lovers enjoy having a few indoor plants in their house to bring a little life to their interior space. In addition, to liven up spaces, indoor plants also brighten up spaces, add color and texture to a room and help purify the air. It’s easy to get started when you buy houseplants online. No need to hunt all over town for some healthy plants fitting your room’s needs.

Plants require light for the process of photosynthesis to survive. In addition, they also need water and carbon dioxide. Plants that grow in the dark require access to light but can still grow in shady spots. This makes it possible to place them in a dim or dark apartment and still survive. Here’s a look at some tips on how to care for plants that grow in the dark.

Consider LED Lighting

Low-heat and energy-efficient lights commonly referred to as LED lights emit light that can be used in the growth of plants. Their ability to produce light that is needed by plants can help improve the efficiency of indoor plant cultivation and help your plants thrive. When using Led lights you can either use blue light for foliage or red for flowering plants. They are also cooler and can be placed closer to your indoor plants without worrying about burning the leaves.

With the advancement of LED technology, you can find modern LED lights that are engineered to reduce how much heat is given off. However, you can also use traditional grow lights though LEDs are the best, especially for beginners. The only setback is that the cost of replacement and energy increases as time goes by. Get quality LED grow lights for your custom grow rooms and provide your plants with more light.

Window placement consideration

Low-light indoor plants thrive when placed in an east- or west-facing room with a window or two, even with no access to direct sunshine. The presence of a window or windows allows the penetration of a bit of light into the room which is important for the plants. If you don’t have any windows, try leaving some artificial lights on for a few hours.

Place hanging planters

Lack of enough space can make it difficult to determine where to place your indoor plants. In such cases, you will need extra room for extra lighting. This is where hanging planters come into play. Plant any small plants in a hanging planter. This allows you to customize lighting solutions whenever you feel that the lighting is not enough. For example, if you have a sturdy ceiling, you can hang your planter high enough or on a pole or near a window or light source where a bit of light can penetrate. You can also build shelves on the walls close to your windows and place your pots on them. For creeping indoor plants, place a ladder where the plants can creep towards a light source.

With these few tips, you should be able to take good care of your plants in low light. But, it’s best to check the plants’ requirements and other aspects like water uptake. For example, some plants like the snake plant can survive with low light. Others thrive in low light but require weekly watering while others can tolerate humidity of any level.
