The Best Clothes for Breastfeeding Mums

The Best Clothes for Breastfeeding Mums

Getting ready for your breastfeeding journey often means investing in a few new pieces of clothing. From special tops and bras to nursing sweaters Australia, the right breastfeeding clothes can go a long way to ensuring your comfort and style while nursing. It used to be the case that all breastfeeding clothes were awkward and unfashionable. Modern brands are changing that, and many of the options now available are fashionable, comfortable and perfect for everyday wear. To help you prepare for your new baby, we’re going to go over some of our best ideas for clothes that every breastfeeding mum should have in her wardrobe.

Breastfeeding Bras

Every breastfeeding wardrobe has to start with strong foundations. Breastfeeding bras are designed with special clasps and hooks that allow pieces of fabric to be removed or folded out of the way at feeding time. While it’s totally possible to wear a normal bra and simply pull it down or to one side, that can be hard on the support and elastics in the fabric. A high-quality breastfeeding bra will last much longer and won’t be damaged by regular use. If you’re worried about feeling good in a nursing bra then don’t worry! Plenty of modern brands now make options that are designed to look and feel amazing, so you won’t be stuck with dowdy nursing bras.

T-Shirts and Tank Tops

There’s nothing wrong with sticking to the basics when it comes to feeding your baby. T-shirts and tank tops are the ideal pieces of clothing for days at home and casual outings alike. Just like with bras, repeatedly pulling your t-shirt aside to feed your baby can damage the fabric and elastic. You can sidestep this issue by looking for shirts that have lower-cut or V-cut necks. These give you plenty of access without having to worry about ruining your shirts.

For bonus points, you can also layer t-shirts with a tank top underneath. Having a tank top on gives you plenty of coverage if you end up having to lift your shirt up to feed your baby. If you’re concerned about modesty when breastfeeding in public, this simple layering trick can keep you from feeling too exposed.

High Waisted Pants

Breastfeeding clothes often focus on things like tops and dresses. It’s easy to see why that happens, but it’s important to remember your lower half too! The pants you wear can make a big impact on your comfort level. High-waisted pants and tights are a great addition to your wardrobe while nursing. The high waist provides support for your postpartum recovery and can give you some extra coverage when lifting your shirt to feed your baby.

Wrap and Crossover Dresses

Access is always the goal when it comes to breastfeeding. The easier the access, the easier your life will be, especially when you’re out in public. Dresses and tops that are designed with crossover or wrap necks not only look good, but they also provide fantastic access at feeding time! The best part is that wrap and crossover dresses look right at home amongst your other clothes. No one would even know that it was designed to help with breastfeeding.

Sweaters and Jackets

Australia might not be known for its cold weather, but there are certainly times when you’ll need to rug up. Jackets are classic pieces of clothing that look good and provide plenty of modesty when feeding. The only problem is that they’re typically not very warm. Adding in a sweater is a good way to stay toasty. Regular jumpers have a habit of getting in the way of breastfeeding, but dedicated nursing sweaters Australia provide plenty of access. Nursing sweaters feature things like side zips or discreet flaps that make it easy to feed your baby without sacrificing comfort or modesty.

Purpose-Designed Breastfeeding Clothes

Last but certainly not least, we strongly recommend investing in some purpose-designed breastfeeding clothes. You don’t have to replace your entire wardrobe. You’ll only be breastfeeding your baby for a few months and it can get expensive to buy dozens of new pieces. Instead, focus on buying a few pieces of breastfeeding clothing that will make your life easier.

Breastfeeding clothes come with specialty designs that make it easier to feed your baby. Some of the most popular types include discreet zips, flaps, or folds that won’t get in the way at feeding time. If you can, spend a little bit more on higher-quality clothes with discreet access points. That way you’ll be able to continue wearing them as regular clothing long after your baby has stopped breastfeeding.
