The Ultimate Guide on Modern Sinks

The Ultimate Guide on Modern Sinks

Sinks are an essential part of the home, often used throughout each day. But sinks are increasingly becoming a design element in homes as well, and modern sinks are available in a range of colors, styles, and materials to fit the decor and needs of any kitchen or bathroom.

Bathroom Sinks

Modern bathroom sinks tend to be minimalistic, with these modern sinks being good examples of that aesthetic. Many people prefer the clean look and neutral colors, but warm metal sinks such as brass or copper have also become quite popular.

Bathroom Sink Styles

Vessel sinks have been popular for several years, and they’re still a good choice for a modern bathroom. They feature a bowl that sits on top of the counter rather than mounted in or under it, making them a prominent feature in the bathroom. In addition, the many different looks, shapes, and colors for the bowl make them highly customizable to fit any bathroom decor.

For those who like the vessel style but perhaps don’t want to go quite that bold, a semi-recessed sink is a halfway point between a vessel sink and one that’s more traditional. Semi-recessed sinks sit partially inside the countertop, leaving the top of the bowl protruding.

A console sink is another modern look. The basin of a console sink is mounted on a frame rather than within a cabinet, giving it a very sleek look. Smaller versions are also perfect for bathrooms where space is an issue. However, these sinks do not offer any storage underneath them, which can be a drawback.

Undermount styles are also a popular option for a modern sink due to their seamless look. These sinks are mounted underneath the countertop, so there is no rim to clean around. This style gives a high-end minimalist look and also saves space.

Bathroom Sink Materials

Bathroom sinks are typically ceramic, but some more modern sinks are copper or brass, or even glass for the vessel sinks. Each material has pros and cons to consider.

Bathroom Sink Colors

Bathroom sinks are often a bit more colorful than kitchen sinks, depending on the room’s decor. People who prefer a more clean, minimal look can stick with white. Glass vessel sinks, in particular, can come in many colors and patterns.

Kitchen Sinks

Gone are the days of sinks being only stainless steel or white-enameled cast iron. Instead, modern kitchen sinks come in various materials, and each has its pros and cons. When choosing a kitchen sink, the primary considerations are functionality and looks.

Kitchen Sink Materials

  • Brass sinks have a shiny finish that resists dents and scratches. They add beautiful, rich color, but they are higher maintenance than other sinks.
  • Cast iron sinks are heavy-duty and durable. Their enamel surface is non-porous and fused to the cast iron with high heat. They are heavy and meant to be installed by a professional.
  • Ceramic sinks are durable and easy to clean, and they also resist scratches and stains.
  • Copper sinks are easy to install and require low maintenance. They also have a unique look not seen often in kitchens. Copper is also antimicrobial and eliminates worry about bacteria in the sink.
  • Enamel sinks come in many colors and are easy to match to your kitchen’s decor. In addition, they’re non-porous, so they resist staining and don’t attract dirt.
  • Granite composite sinks are durable, resisting stains, heat, and scratches. They also don’t clang as much as stainless steel sinks, but they can’t be cleaned with abrasive cleaners, either. Solid granite sinks have even more durability but at a higher price.
  • Porcelain sinks are easy to clean, but they’re susceptible to cracking if something heavy or sharp is dropped into them. They’re also prone to stains and must be cleaned often.
  • Stainless steel sinks are easy to clean, but they’re among the noisiest of the options. If silverware drops into a stainless steel sink, it causes quite a clatter. Water running into the sink can be noisy as well.

Kitchen Sink Colors

White and stainless steel are the most popular colors for modern sinks because of their clean look and ability to coordinate with anything else. However, black is also increasing in popularity as another color that looks good with just about everything.

Kitchen Sink Styles

Apron-style sinks are enjoying a rise in popularity. These sinks have an exposed front that becomes part of the front of the cabinetry. They also reduce the chance of water damage to the surrounding cabinets.

Drop-in sinks remain a common choice and are the simplest to install. They come in various sizes and single- and double-bowl configurations.

Kitchen sinks also come in undermount styles, like bathroom sinks, and they have the same benefits.

An Option for Every Home

There are many options for modern sinks in both the bathroom and kitchen. No matter the room’s decor, a sink can be found to match the style and color. If functionality is the priority, the various material options offer something for every lifestyle.
