Tips for Caring for Your Lawn in Summer

Tips for Caring for Your Lawn in Summer

Not many lawns survive the summer season, and if yours does, it becomes the envy of your neighbors. The summer season invites many outdoor activities, so your lawn may experience the highest foot traffic during this season. The high heat may also dehydrate the grass, and the look may not be that inviting. That does not mean you can’t have a beautiful lawn during summer. All you need is to know what to do, and you will not notice any difference with the lawn despite the season. Here are tricks to prepare and take care of your lawn during summer.

Remove Weeds

If you spot weeds on the lawn, it is essential to pluck them out before they spread. This way, the grass will not compete for water and nutrients. You can buy a weed killer or use home remedies to kill weeds. Try removing any weed you come across in the yard early enough to maintain the health and appearance of your lawn.

Plant Heat-Tolerant Grass

There are different types of grass, each with unique characteristics. Therefore, when choosing the grass, pick a type that will not die when summer comes. Choose a grass tolerant to heat, so you still have it even as the hot season hits. Even with the right type of grass, ensure you fertilize at the right time and amount, so you don’t scorch the lawn. Use fertilizer made for the summer season to prevent stressing the grass further. If you have cool-season grass, don’t fertilize it in summer since it is in its dormant stage.

Don’t Cut the Grass Too Short

You may be tempted to trim the grass short now that summer is here and you intend to use the yard often. However, trimming the grass short is a bad idea. Don’t go too short so that you don’t have patchy areas. The soil may lose moisture quickly when exposed to too much heat. So, leave it a bit higher than you usually mow to help retain moisture by preventing evaporation. The grass may increase due to the favorable elements- light, water, and air- during summer. Therefore, you may have to trim several times before summer ends.

Keep the Grass Hydrated

Watering your grass during summer is an essential aspect. However, you need to know the best time to water it in summer. Pick a time when it is appropriate to water. You can water it in the morning, so the soil has enough time to absorb before evaporation. Another time to water the grass can be in the evening as the sun sets or during the night. In short, pick a perfect time, so water can stay longer in the soil. Look for remarkable lawn care near me to find professionals who can help water your lawn at the right time. They can install a sprinkler system so that it will be easy to water our yard.

Aerate Your Lawn

Aeration is an essential aspect you should try once a year. It reduces soil compaction, which allows water, air, and nutrients to reach the root system. All you have to do is to pole small holes on the ground. Remember, heavily compacted soil hinders water, air, and nutrients from penetrating, which is why aeration is essential to let the soil breathe.

Handle Pests

You already have difficulty watering, weeding, and mowing the lawn. Add the issue of pests, and you might be running out of mind. Pests that attack your grass during summer can negatively impact the grass, leaving patches and ugly spots on the grass. Others come with diseases, and your entire lawn may die. The best thing to do is apply preventive pest control before it happens. Look for ways to identify pests on your lawn and look for immediate solutions. It will help you preserve the health of your lawn.

Don’t Walk on the Grass

As you find a way to get rid of pests that destroy your grass, try not to ruin the grass by walking on it. You may also be a culprit of unhealthy grass if you have a habit of walking on the grass. So, use the sidewalks or choose a specific place to walk if you have to.

Summary

The heat in summer can take a toll on your beautiful grass, especially if you don’t take good care of it. Therefore, know how to do things correctly to ensure your grass remains healthy irrespective of the season. Hopefully, these tips will help you on the way.
