Tips For Making Your Garage More Secure

Garage doors are more than convenient entrances to your home. They also provide security against burglars and pests. That is why it is important to ensure that they’re properly maintained to enhance security in the home. Old doors can be vulnerable access points. You shouldn’t be taking the risks as far as the safety of your family is concerned. That is why you should be looking for a garage door opener repair whenever you notice there is a problem with the door. In addition to that, here are some tips that will come in handy if you’re looking to make the garage door more secure.

Installing a Home Security System

A modern security system will not only monitor your home but also the garage door as well. Most burglars will want to start with the garage because there is a low chance of being heard by the inhabitants of the home. There are security systems in the market which allow you to monitor every corner in the home. Such systems have become inexpensive and there are a ton of options in the market currently. There is no reason why you shouldn’t be trying them out.

Securing the Garage Window

This is another vulnerable entry point that is likely to be used by burglars. It is easy for thieves to see what is in the garage through the windows and will also use them as an access point. You can deter the thieves by adding blinds or curtains. You could also tint the windows if you’re looking for a low maintenance solution.

Motion Detector Lights

One of the effective ways of preventing burglary is by scaring the intruders. This you can do by installing motion detector lights in front of your garage and different areas of the home where you think could be vulnerable. Make sure that the lights are always working. You can upgrade them if you need more dependability. To make it even more effective, you should place the motion detector lights inside the garage door. This will obviously catch the intruder by surprise and he or she is likely to run away instead of entering the house.

Upgrade Your Garage Door

You might be having an old door and it won’t mean a thing to your safety endeavors if it is the vulnerable piece. An old garage door will need to be replaced. You feel safer knowing that the door can’t be interfered with. There have been manufacturing improvements over the last couple of years which has seen very sturdy garage doors. Upgrading your garage door will make sense if you’re looking for a more reliable and safer door. These doors are more durable as they’re likely to withstand the elements.

Improved Lift Mechanism

If you can’t install a new door then you should be investing in a new lift mechanism. For early garage doors, there is efficiency with the lift mechanism but there was a vulnerability with the open remote frequencies. This means that it was easy for someone to have access to your garage with a duplicate remote device. With the advent of new technology, garage door manufacturers have come up with a new feature which creates a new code every time the garage door is opened. This improves the lift mechanism and you also get to prevent the code from being duplicated.

Don’t Keep the Remote in Your Car

It might appear to be convenient keeping the garage door remote in the car but that is not usually recommended. There is the risk of losing the garage remote or having it stolen if you don’t always lock your car. This means that someone will have access to your home since the remote will not be in your hands. Always keep the keys in handy and you can prevent losing it by using a key chain.

Regular Maintenance

Most homeowners will only start thinking about the garage door when they notice visible problems. This shouldn’t be the case since a small problem could mean that your home is vulnerable to intruders. Regular maintenance will also include inspections.

To sum it up, you need to take a proactive approach with the garage door. Don’t want until the problems get out of hand before you can start looking for a contractor. It is also advisable that you replace the garage door if you have an old one in place. The new ones are safer and durable which is something you should be looking out for.
