What are Some of the Key Principles of Minimalist Design?

What are Some of the Key Principles of Minimalist DesignMinimalist design has become all the rage in the last few years because people love the idea of having an interior space that is simple yet modern and elegant. While the minimalist design might seem simple, it can be a little more complicated once you start designing. A residential architect has to plan and create each space with great attention to detail.

One of the main parts of minimalism is that you can’t have too much stuff. So, you will need to start by downsizing what you have. Every item in your home should have a purpose. You will need to go through the items in your home and determine which ones have a purpose and which ones need to be sold or given away. If you’re looking for ideas on minimalist design, this guide will cover the key principles you need to know when designing the interior of your home.

Have Only One Piece of Stand Out Furniture

In other types of homes, there might be multiple pieces of color or standout furniture. With minimalist design though, there should be one main focal piece or standout piece. In minimalist design, you will find that most items in the home are colors like gray, black, or white. The standout piece can be a color that pops. Some people think if you follow a minimalist design that there should be no colors in the house, but one single piece of color is not an issue. Just make sure the function and form of the piece match whatever else is going on in the home.

Choose Some Art

Another main principle of minimalist design is to choose a piece of art that can dominate the space. The best way to allow art to dominate the space is to make it a very large piece of art and hang it on some wall space that you have behind the couch or TV. This also makes the space look more feminine as some people are worried that the monotone colors of minimalist design look a little too masculine.

Keep the Furniture Simple

In minimalist design, all the furniture needs to be as simple as possible. The furniture should not be very noticeable and it should not be the focal point of the room. Most minimalist designers choose furniture that is low to the ground and colors like gray or dark blue.

Coffee tables are also usually low to the ground but lamps and other items can be higher. The different levels of furniture and heights go along with the minimalist design and make a creative and unique space.

Let Your Views Stand Out

If your home has large windows and great views, you can minimize the furniture and things in the room so that the main focal point of the area is the view and not actually anything you have in the home. Make sure to remove all items from the room that you do not use as this can further make the space minimal and allow the focus to just be on the view itself. Choose a simple couch, a small coffee table, and maybe one or two indoor plants to create a nice and simple space.

Make Sure There is Open Space

In minimalist design, there are no rooms in the house that should be filled with furniture or other items. You want to keep everything in the room simple and allow there to be more open space than furniture. An open kitchen is a major aspect to the minimalist design.

Luxury kitchen designers have experience in creating these beautiful spaces and making your visions come true. Most of the time, people also avoid rugs or carpets as this can make the space look crowded. Let the floors be bare and choose just a few simple spaces to be in the room.

Fixtures Are Everything

In minimalist design, the fixtures in the home are just as important as the furniture and the design. Most designers will add a few expensive and high-quality fixtures to the home including light fittings, a gas fireplace, or integrated storage units.

All these fixtures make the home look more expensive and effortlessly chic and elegant. Even though these fixtures can be a little on the pricey side, keep in mind you will spend less on furniture and other items since minimalism is about creating space as mentioned above.

Use Texture

Even though the colors in minimalist design are often muted, one of the key principles is using different textures and different materials to make the area stand out. You can choose cloth or canvas for decorations on the walls. Some people also choose to add some pottery or timber to the space to give it some extra textures. 3-D paintings are also a nice choice because they allow texture to be integrated into the room and they allow the painting to be the focal point of the room.

Simple and Functional

All pieces in your home should be simple and functional from the couches to the paintings to the tables. As mentioned before, all pieces in the home need to have a function or a purpose. No random items should be lying around as this can add clutter and stress to the home. The colors in the home need to be simple and you need to choose a color palette. More than one color is okay but you want the color palette to match and all the colors need to complement one another.

Minimalist architecture is all about creating an open and welcoming space so you don’t have random things lying all over the house. You also want your themes to be consistent throughout the house. This means similar colors, shapes, and textures in every room.

Final Thoughts

If you are ready to get started with minimalist design, it’s important to follow the design principles outlined in this guide. You should also consider contacting an architectural firm or designer firm to help you get on the right track. They can either design your whole space or they can just help give you some pointers and help you find the right pieces for the home.
