What to Bring on Your Winter Vacation

What to Bring on Your Winter Vacation

Packing for a summertime sojourn on the beach or a tropical island is pretty easy. Swimsuit, flip flops, sunscreen, check. Of course, it’s a little more complex than that, but it is easier to pack for summer instead of winter. Winter vacations require more strategy and some key decisions on exactly what winter vacation clothing to bring.

Whether you are planning a skiing or snowboarding vacation to a special home you discovered or celebrating the beauty of winter with time around the fireplace while you watch the snow, you should follow this handy guide for winter vacation packing success.

Wear the Heavy Items, Pack the Rest

If you want to be sure you don’t have to pay excess baggage fees, be sure to wear the heaviest and bulkiest items and pack the rest of your winter vacation clothing. That means you wear your big winter jacket and any other items, such as a big scarf, that would take up too much room in the suitcase. In addition, you should wear your boots, which are likely the heaviest item you’ll be taking with you.

Layering – The Key to Winter Flexibility and Comfort

When you are on vacation, your activities and their corresponding temperatures may vary greatly. You may spend the morning skiing, the late afternoon by the fire on the resort patio, and early evening at a great local restaurant. Each of those experiences is going to require that you dress differently.

If you layer your clothing rather than wearing one heavy bulky item, you’ll have all the flexibility you need. On the ski slopes or at the snowboard park, your layers of clothing will keep you comfortable even during the snow and possible wind. You can then remove a layer when you are having wine or sipping hot cider near the fireplace at the resort. Another layer or two can come off when it’s time to be indoors for your evening meal.

Footwear for the Snow

Conditions are likely to vary from snow to ice, slush, and sometimes mud as you explore the ski village and travel around the area. It’s best to select boots that keep you warm, are waterproof, and have really good soles and tread. You’ll want great boots not only for comfort and warmth but also for safety as you walk everywhere. Many weatherproof boots are made of leather and can also be lined to keep you extra cozy and warm.

Pick the Right Socks

Along with the right boots, it’s really important to pick the right women’s socks. Lightweight wool socks are a great choice for comfort and for keeping warm. With at least three pairs you can plan on washing the socks as you go along. In very wet weather, one great travel trick is to wear a pair of wool socks and cover them with a pair of waterproof socks too.

The Thermal Layer Keeps You Warm

If you want to keep warm even when the temperatures dip and the wind is howling outside, be sure to bring a pair of thermal leggings and a long-sleeved thermal undergarment for your top. These add extra warmth to any outfit you wear. Travel pros say that it’s best to select thermals made of Merino wool. This special wool keeps you very warm relative to its weight and also traps body heat between the fibers. Merino wool is also very comfortable against your skin.

Pack a Great Pair of Jeans

A great pair of jeans can be your go-to item when you travel in the winter. Travel jeans are worth considering, as they come with far more pockets for your travel gear. Your jeans should be nice enough to wear to dinner in the village and be stretchy enough to allow extra layers to be worn below. Fabric that dries quickly when wet will help if you get soaked in snow or rain.

Sweaters for Dress Up and Layering

Packing several good sweaters for your winter vacation is a good idea. You can wear a sweater over a collared shirt for a dressier look and can also use a sweater as part of your layering strategy. Merino wool sweaters will provide ideal warmth for your travels.

Bring a Couple of Coats

A waterproof down jacket and a stylish wool coat make a great combination when you are packing for your winter vacation. You can layer them if necessary. Plan on wearing the waterproof down when conditions are snowy or wet. The wool coat will be dressy enough for any place that requires more than casual wear. You could even opt for a battery-heated coat if you need an extra boost of warmth. A firm like ActionHeat offers battery heated clothing, so it’s worth taking a look if a standard coat isn’t enough to keep you warm.

Hats, Gloves, Scarves, and Personal Accessories

In winter, you lose much of your heat through your head. Select a hat that keeps your head warm and your ears covered, too. A big scarf is great for keeping you warm and it can also dress up an outfit. You should always wear gloves to protect your fingers from severe cold. It’s really helpful if you select a pair of gloves that also lets you use the screen on your phone. Round out your winter vacation packing with polarized sunglasses, lip balm, and moisturizer. And remember, it’s sunny out there, so make sure to bring some sunscreen! Don’t forget to check out these quality ski & snowboard helmets.

It’s important to pack the right winter vacation clothing. By layering and making sure you have picked the best items for your trip, you can help ensure that you will stay comfortable, cozy and warm.
